Activities of Czech Cartographic Society
Czech Cartographic Conferences
Czech Cartographic conferences are a long-standing meeting of cartographers, showcasing achievements, addressing challenges, and providing a platform to discuss the field’s future. The series began in 1967. Since 2015, the conferences have been held every two years. The 26th Cartographic Conference was held in Brno in September 2025.
Map of the Year
Map of the Year is a prestigious competition organized by the Czech Cartographic Society to recognize outstanding cartographic works created in the Czech Republic. Since 1997, it has highlighted excellence and innovation across a wide range of products, including printed maps and atlases, digital maps, mobile and web applications, and other cartographic projects by both professionals and students.
National Barbara Petchenik Children’s Drawing Competition
The aim of the competition is to develop children’s creative expression about the world, enhance their graphic awareness, and deepen their understanding of the environment. Children from the Czech Republic have participated regularly since 1995, with six artworks selected each year for the international round. In 2025, Ondřej Šlechta’s drawing “The Start of My Way” achieved a wonderful 3rd place in the 9–12 age category of the competition.
Cartographic Days Olomouc
The Czech Cartographic Society organizes an event called Cartographic Day Olomouc . When creating a map (or an atlas), three institutions typically collaborate: a subject-matter expert, a cartographer, and a technical specialist responsible for map production. The purpose of these seminars is to help these experts communicate and work together.
Cartoanniversary
Cartoanniversaries are one-day professional seminars dedicated to a selected cartographic topic, combined with a reflection on significant milestones in both global and Czech cartographic history. The seminar typically includes an introductory presentation on historical milestones, invited talks on the chosen cartographic theme, and a concluding open discussion between speakers and participants.
The Czech Cartographic Society also publishes a quarterly newsletter that shares news and information about cartographic activities in the Czech Republic and abroad. It actively supports its members’ scientific and professional work, including through a Conference Fund that helps enable their participation in key cartographic events. The Society regularly provides patronage to conferences and initiatives that promote cartography and related fields. Since the 2016/2017 school year, it has also organized a competition for the best map on a geographic theme within the national Geography Olympiad, encouraging map skills and creativity among pupils and secondary school students.
